Description

This is a large, early to mid-19th century building composed of three sections of eight, ten, and eight bays respectively. The building is four storeys high with a basement, and the central section is taller than the wings. It is constructed of stock brick with stone dressings. The wings feature an ornamental entablature at the third floor level, a simple frieze cornice, and a blocking course at the top. The central section has a giant Corinthian order, with paired engaged columns and pilasters that begin on a second-floor band. The first floor of the centre and the entire ground floor are stuccoed, with banded rustications forming voussoirs around the openings (Nos. 81-87 have round-headed openings). Other windows are set within gauged brick arches with moulded architraves on the first floor of the centre. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars, with the exception of a long casement window on the first floor of the wings. A long first-floor balcony extends across the central block. The second-floor windows on the sides have moulded architraves with long triple keys which overlap the main frieze. Similar architraves with ears and feet, a pulvinated frieze, a cornice, and alternating triangular and segmental pediments decorate the first-floor windows in the wings. The doorways consist of six ornamental panels, a cornice head, and a patterned fanlight, with engaged fluted side columns in the wings and incised pilasters in the centre. The building is surrounded by cast iron spearhead area railings.
