Description
This is a substantial early to mid-19th century building of four storeys and a basement, originally comprising 4, 6, 8, 6, and 4 windows. It is constructed of stock brick with stone dressings, including quoins to the outer sections. Stone entablatures are present on the second floor of all sections except the central one. The windows in the outer sections have moulded architraves, with keystones to the first-floor windows. The central section features rusticated brickwork on the ground and first floors, creating the impression of voussoirs around the openings. A monumental giant Corinthian order, featuring paired pilasters and engaged columns, sits above the second-floor band. The first-floor windows in the outer sections are long casements with transoms, which open onto a full-width cast iron balcony. Other windows are sash windows with glazing bars, with the upper central ones set under flat, gauged brick arches. Some upper windows have wrought iron guards. The shared entrance doors consist of six panels, with engaged fluted columns, a cornice head, and a fanlight with vertical bars. One eastern door features a patterned fanlight. The building has wrought iron area railings with spade or spearhead detailing. A mid-19th century shopfront was added to number 123, incorporating an angled entrance with freestanding columns supporting a corner feature above.
