Description

The Royal Waterloo Hospital is a large building constructed in the late 19th century, designed by architect Sir Charles Nicholson. It features red brick with terra-cotta dressings and blue and green glazed tiles, topped with slated roofs and tall brick chimneys. The structure has gabled three-bay side sections that flank a seven-bay gabled center, which includes open arcading on three floors above a sunk basement. The arcading is made of terra-cotta and showcases patterned spandrels with inscriptions that indicate royal patronage. The ground floor features elliptical-arch closed arcading with decorative tympana, and similar decorative elements separate the floors in the side sections. The building has a curved corner where it meets Stamford Street, and tall wrought-iron area railings. At the north end, there are glazed brick piers topped with terra-cotta cornices and an overthrow with a lampholder.
