Description

Cromwell Lodge is a house dating from around 1740, with some alterations. It is constructed of brick, mostly covered in stucco, and features a slated hipped roof with a parapet. The building has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a 'T' shaped plan. There is a circa 1900 extension between the original wings at the rear and a one-storey entrance area between the wings at the front. The left wing, which faces the road, has two bays, while the right side features a one-storey entrance area with a round-headed entrance on the right return (the fanlight was removed for restoration in 1988). The windows are square-headed sashes, some unhorned, with glazing bars and small panes, and there are c1900 moulded cornices above the windows. There are chimney stacks on the right side of the left wing and on the right gable return of the right wing.

Inside, the dining room retains original sunk panelling from floor to ceiling, along with a dado rail, dado panelling, a dentil cornice, a moulded timber fire surround, and a panel with a carved surround above. Original door and window architraves and panelled soffits to the windows are also present. Various other early features remain in the house, including 18th-century door architraves and doors, a simple 18th-century partition in the attic, and marble fireplaces from around 1800 in the living room and bedroom.
