Description
Kennet House is a house dating from the early 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of red brick and features a hipped tiled roof. The building has a long rectangular plan running east to west, with three gabled wings extending at right angles to the south. It stands two storeys tall with an attic, and includes a plinth, a moulded band at the first floor, and rubbed brick flat arches over the windows. The eaves cornice is bracketed and features a central dormer with a pediment on the north side, flanked by chimneys.
On the north elevation, there are eight glazing bar sash windows with exposed box frames. The six windows on the left are part of the original build, while the two on the right are from a slightly later addition. The elevation also includes three elaborate cast lead rainwater heads and three insurance plaques located between the third and fourth sashes from the left. The entrance features an eight-panel door in the third bay from the left, with raised and fielded bolection moulded panels set in a moulded architrave that supports a frieze and keyblock, flanked by carved scroll brackets. The cornice curves back in the centre to support a shell pediment hood, with a cupid figure sitting on a scroll at the base of the shell. There are three stone steps leading up to the door.
Inside, the house features 18th-century bolection moulded panelling in the hall, landing, and ground and first-floor rooms on the east side, including bolection fire surrounds and matching doors. The open well stair has a moulded handrail that ramps up to square newels and twisted balusters. The rooms to the west are adorned with dado panelling and plaster cornices.
