Description
Vicar Street House is a house dating from around 1740, constructed of brick with machine tile roofs. It has two storeys and a dormer attic, arranged in five symmetrical bays. The central entrance features a panelled and fielded door beneath a three-vaned fanlight, framed by an open pedimented doorcase supported by fluted Doric columns with a block entablature. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, set beneath gauged skewback arches, all of which were added in the later 18th century. The gabled roof includes three flat-topped dormers fitted with late 19th-century horned sashes. There is a partly external gable-end stack on the north side and a two-storeyed cross wing at the rear, which has casements on the east gable end and a partly external stack at the junction of the wings.
Inside, there is a cellar with nine wine bins, and the rear stack has a passage behind it created by an outshut addition. Most doors are fielded and panelled. The early 19th-century staircase features stick balusters. The south ground-floor room at the front has large framed nibbed panels, and the bridging beam and cornice are plastered with running scroll decoration. There is also a bolection-moulded chimneypiece.
