Description

14 and 16 Vicar Street is a house built in 1793, with an office added to the north (No. 14) in 1880. The building is constructed of red brick with a gault brick facade and has a roof made of black glazed pantiles. No. 16 features two storeys and a dormer attic, arranged in three bays. The entrance has a panelled door beneath a five-vaned fanlight, set within a four-centred arch. The windows are sash style, replaced in 1880, and include glazing bars and gauged skewback arches. The building has a panelled parapet, a hipped roof with two flat-topped dormers, and two chimney stacks. The south return wall is mostly blank, except for a tall rounded recessed niche. The rear of the building has a basement due to the sloping ground, featuring three bays, with the northern bay designed as a two-storey bow window fitted with curved sashes and glazing bars. There is a glazed door to the south within a panelled arched doorcase, accompanied by one sash window to its left and two on the first floor. The rear also has a plain parapet and one flat-topped dormer, along with a central ridge stack. No. 14 consists of two storeys in three bays, with sash windows featuring glazing bars and gauged skewback arches, and a hipped roof.

Inside, a four-centred arch with a panelled soffit leads to the staircase hall, which includes a stick baluster staircase with a ramped and wreathed handrail. The ground floor south room has a fireplace supported by fluted engaged columns and a fluted frieze. The first-floor rear room features a coved ceiling and a gasolier. No. 14 also contains a cast-iron spiral staircase from 1880.
