Description

The Church of St John the Evangelist was built between 1852 and 1853 by Benjamin Ferrey. It is constructed from Kentish ragstone rubble with Bath stone dressings and is designed in the Perpendicular style. The church features a nave with a clerestory and a lower chancel. The nave aisles extend to become chancel aisles but do not reach the east end. The body of the church has plain parapets, while the tall west tower, which has four stages, is topped with a battlemented parapet featuring stone chequerwork. This tower includes angle turrets, paired bell-openings, and a clock below. Inside, the plain plastered interior has a four-bay nave supported by tall octagonal arcade piers. It retains its original pews, and there is a west gallery and an organ located in the tower behind. The east end of the chancel is walled off, leaving only a short sanctuary. Additionally, there are some fragments of heraldic glass in the south aisle, and the north transept was added in 1876.
