Description
The Old Town Hall, now occupied by the Church of England Children’s Society, is a classical building dating from the mid-19th century. It was originally Lambeth Town Hall. The building is two storeys high with a sunken basement and features nine windows arranged in three sections of three bays. The slightly projecting central section has a tetrastyle Tuscan portico set in an antis, topped by a modillion cornice and a pediment. The exterior is constructed of greyish brick. The outer sections are divided by paired pilasters, each with an entablature at each floor, and boast an arcaded ground floor. Sash windows with margin lights are set within moulded architraves; the ground floor centre windows have console bracketed cornices and pediments. A modern central entrance is framed by a surround of vermiculate rusticated columns, a Doric entablature, and a later, thin pediment, all set within a larger surround also with vermiculate rustication. Wrought iron area railings, some of which have been replaced, have bulb finials. The building's overall shape is T-shaped, and the central rear projection has a bowed end.
