Description

This is a symmetrical terrace of houses numbered 6 to 14, located on Albert Square. Dating to the 18th century, the terrace consists of houses grouped in the pattern 1-2-3-2-1. Each house is 3 1/2 storeys high and 2 or 3 windows wide. The exterior is predominantly stock brick with hipped slate roofs, accented by extensive stucco dressings. These include quoins and incised detailing to the ground floor and basement, as well as banded panels and an entablature incorporating a dentil cornice in places. A main entablature, featuring a modillion cornice and curved brackets, sits at the third-floor level, while a smaller cornice is present at the second floor and a top cornice with a blocking course completes the facade. The windows are sash windows, many featuring glazing bars, set within moulded architraves. Console bracketed cornices are found above the first-floor windows. Nos. 6, 9, 11, and 14 have projecting square bays, with grouped first-floor windows beneath central pediments. There's a central pediment above the group of houses. Round-arched doorways, with impost strings, lead to 4-panel doors, each topped with a plain fanlight. Balustrades are present at the area openings and along the sides of the flights of 6 steps leading to the front doors.
