Description

This is a terrace of six pairs of semi-detached houses, numbers 47 to 54, located on the south side of St James's Gardens. Constructed between 1847 and 1851, the terrace was designed by John Barnett. The buildings are constructed of stock brick and stucco, with three storeys and a basement. Each pair of houses has four windows, plus recessed two-storey outer bays connecting them to the adjacent pair. The ground floor and basement are stuccoed, and feature round-headed windows with architraves and archivolt bands. Stone balconies with low cast iron trellis balustrades are present. A cornice runs above the ground floor. The first and top-floor windows have architrave surrounds and cornices, with cill bands to the top storey. A modillioned cornice and blocking course top the elevation. Porches are located in the outer bays, accessed by steps, and contain round-headed, panelled doors. The cornices of numbers 47 to 50 have been altered. The terrace is part of a larger, unified development that includes numbers 1 to 24 and 42 to 46.
