Description
The monument to Edward Macklew in Kensal Green Cemetery is a square pedestal tomb with a stepped base, featuring inset inscription panels and an egg-and-dart cornice. Atop the pedestal is a large urn with intricate Classical decoration. Although the flared base of the urn is significantly eroded, some wreath and foliage designs are still visible. The bowl of the urn is adorned with stylized acanthus leaves that spiral up to a central band decorated with cable and wave-scroll mouldings. Above this are festoons hanging between female masks with plaited braids, all beneath a moulded and scalloped rim. The lid of the urn is further embellished with acanthus-leaf ornamentation that curls over a substantial two-stage finial. The main inscription highlights Edward Macklew’s "sterling worth, kindness, generosity and extensive benevolence," while additional inscriptions honor Andrew Macklew, who died in 1847, and Catherine Barker, who died in 1878.
