Description
The monument to William Holland, who died in 1856, is located in Kensal Green Cemetery. It features a sarcophagus made of Portland stone, supported by eight winged beasts. The sides of the sarcophagus are designed based on classical examples and include three roundels adorned with suspended garlands and fillets, separated by inverted torches. At the corners, there are figures of angels, and the cover is pedimented with acroteria that mimic roof tiles, supported by four pairs of addorsed griffons. This monument is an exceptionally rich example of High Victorian eclecticism. William Holland was a notable furniture manufacturer and undertaker who partnered with Thomas Dowbiggin, supplying furniture to the Royal Family.
