Description

The monuments to Joseph Locke and Phoebe McCreery are a pair of tombs located in Kensal Green Cemetery. Joseph Locke, who died in 1860, and Phoebe McCreery, who died in 1849, are commemorated by two sarcophagi set on a grey granite base. The left sarcophagus, made of pink Peterhead granite, features a pointed inscription panel dedicated to Locke and was erected by his pupils in 1862. The right sarcophagus, crafted from Carrara marble and inspired by the tomb of Scipio Barbatus, honors John and Phoebe McCreery. Both sarcophagi are placed on a raised base with a paved surround, which is bordered by granite posts. An inscription on the base notes that it was "enlarged and restored by Sarah McCreery in 1870." Joseph Locke was a prominent railway engineer and later served as a Member of Parliament.
