Description
The monument to HRH Princess Sophia is located in Kensal Green Cemetery and consists of a sarcophagus and plinth made of Carrara marble, set on a base of grey Cornish granite. Designed by Professor Ludwig Grüner of Dresden, who was Prince Albert's artistic adviser, the sarcophagus was carved by the Signori Bardi, while the rest of the monument was erected by the London mason Edward Pearce. The sarcophagus features an Italian quattrocento style, with lions'-paw feet and winged lion-heads at the corners. Its body is adorned with rinceaux (vine-scroll bands), and the upper sides showcase garlands, fillets, and the Princess's cipher. Each end displays a heraldic plaque with the royal arms, and the lid is topped with a crown finial.
The sarcophagus is placed on a tall plinth that resembles a tomb chest, featuring an egg-and-dart cornice and raised and fielded panels. The north panel includes the inscription: 'Come unto me all ye that / labour and are heavy laden / and I will give you rest / St Matthew chap.XI verse 28', while the east panel reads: 'Her Royal Highness / The Princess Sophia / 5th daughter of / His Majesty / King George III / Born November 3rd 1777 / Died May 27th 1848'. The plinth is supported by a base of plain granite blocks, which has leaded lettering identifying the stonemason as 'Edward Pearce / 163 & 165 Euston Rd'.
