Description
The Dr Richard Valpy Mausoleum is a Grade II listed structure located in Kensal Green Cemetery, designed by architect John Griffith. This mausoleum, built from Portland stone, commemorates Dr Richard Valpy, who passed away in 1836. It features Greek Doric columns in antis that flank an inscription with an achievement of arms. Above this, there is a frieze adorned with wreaths, topped by a pediment that displays a crest of an oak tree. The sides of the mausoleum are detailed with pilasters, and the roof is decorated with antefixes. Dr Valpy served as the Headmaster of Reading School for 50 years and was a director of the General Cemetery Company, like Griffith.
