Description
The monument is a large chest tomb constructed from Portland stone, erected within Kensal Green Cemetery. Dating to the 19th century, it stands approximately 6 feet high and rests on a two-stage stepped base. The chest itself has gently sloping, battered sides accentuated by channelled quoins, topped with a dentil cornice. The top surface is curved with a segmental pediment at each end. The eastern-facing panel features two coats of arms carved in low relief, surrounded by borders of foliage and military emblems, alongside Evans’s various military decorations and a scroll inscribed 'España Agradecida’ (‘Spain is grateful’). A fortified tower is carved in the tympanum above, possibly representing Castile.
The inscription details the life of Major General Sir George de Lacy Evans, born in 1787 and died in 1870. It recounts his military career, which began in India and included service under Wellington in the Peninsula and south of France, engagements at Quatre Bras and Waterloo, command of the British Legion in Spain in service of that nation, and leadership of the second British division in the Crimea. He also served as a Member of Parliament for the City of Westminster for thirty years. The inscription praises him as an enterprising and shrewd commander and an incorruptible politician.
Additional inscriptions on the monument commemorate Evans’s wife, Josette, who died in 1861, and Major General Richard L Evans, who died in 1848.
