Description
The Sloane Square war memorial is a significant structure made of Portland Stone. It features an octagonal cross with a capped head on a tapered shaft, which stands on a moulded three-stage base. A large bronze sword is attached to the west face of the cross. The cross is topped with a plinth that bears the inscription: 'INVICTIS PAX / IN MEMORY OF THE / MEN AND WOMEN / OF CHELSEA / WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES IN / THE GREAT WAR / MDCCCCXIV / MDCCCCVIII / AND / MCMXXXIX. MCMXLV / THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY / THEIR SOULS TO THEIR GOD', with some of the text continuing onto the step below. The plinth is set on a wide base that consists of three deep steps leading up to three wider, shallower steps. This memorial is not only a simple yet elegant structure but also holds historical significance, connecting the local community to broader world events.
