Description
The Preston Candover War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1919, designed by an unknown architect and made of Portland stone. It features a wayside cross on a tapering octagonal shaft with broach-stops, which is set on a square fielded pedestal that stands on a three-stepped octagonal base. The chamfered arms of the cross lead to octagonal finials. A bronze sword is mounted on the front of the cross, and bronze inscription panels are located on the front and sides of the pedestal.
This memorial was unveiled in 1919 to honor the nineteen men from this downland village who lost their lives in the World Wars. Its design is reminiscent of Sir Reginald Blomfield's 'Cross of Sacrifice,' commonly found in military cemeteries established by the Imperial War Graves Commission.
