Description

A group of four terraced houses dating from around 1841, located on Duncan Terrace in Islington. They are constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco detailing, and have a roof obscured by a parapet. The houses are arranged symmetrically, with the end properties slightly recessed, and extend over a basement and four storeys. The basement and ground floor are stuccoed, the ground floor featuring banded rustication. A round-arched entrance has pilaster jambs, a cornice, and a fanlight. The ground-floor windows are also round-arched, while the first and second-floor windows are flat-arched with gauged brick heads. A continuous, bracketed balcony with iron railings is present on the first floor, and window guards are on the second floor. A moulded stucco cornice runs along the building, culminating in a blocking course at the sill level of the third-floor windows, which themselves are round-arched with gauged brick heads. The houses are topped by a parapet. The original sash windows remain, with radiating glazing bars on the ground floor, except for the first floor of number 40 and the ground floor of number 44. The original cast-iron area railings are also present.
