Description
These are two late 18th-century terraced houses with shop additions, altered in the 19th century. The buildings are constructed of brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, topped with a mansard roof covered in Welsh slate. They are four stories high and have a two-window front.
Number 96 has a shop front with an entrance on the left and a window divided into four bays, featuring slim metal columns shaped like barley sugar. There's a pilaster and console on the right side, along with a fascia and dentil cornice. Number 98’s shop front is positioned on the right and includes two round-arched bays also separated by similar barley-sugar columns, reeded pilasters, and a fascia and cornice that continues the design from number 96.
The windows above the shop fronts have flat arches with gauged brick detailing. A parapet tops the building, and there are two pedimented dormers. The upper stories appear to have been significantly rebuilt. The buildings are included on the list for their contribution to the group value of the street.
