Description

Numbers 22 to 38 (even) and attached railings are a group of early 19th-century terraced houses on Rotherfield Street, Islington. The houses are constructed of stuccoed brick, with a roof hidden behind a parapet. They are three storeys high with a basement, and generally feature two windows each, though number 22 has three windows plus a recessed entrance bay. The ground floor is decorated with banded rustication, and leads to round-arched entrances with Doric columns supporting a cornice. The original cornice survives only on numbers 36 and 38, above fanlights and panelled doors. Ground-floor windows are round-arched with Doric columns incorporated into their reveals. A sill band runs along the first floor. The first and second floors have stucco that is scored to resemble ashlar, with a giant order of Ionic pilasters between each pair of windows, supporting a segmental-arched entablature. First and second-floor windows are flat-arched, with moulded stucco architraves. Six-over-six sash windows are present on the first floor of numbers 30 and 34. The building is finished with a frieze of palmette ornament, a cornice, and a blocking course. The area is enclosed by cast-iron railings, which may be replacements.
