Description

This is a row of terraced houses dating from the early to mid-19th century. The brick facades are covered in stucco, and most of the roofs are hidden behind parapets, although some are of Welsh and artificial slate. The houses are generally three storeys high, with a basement level, and each has one window. They form an arrangement of symmetrical blocks, with three houses at each end parallel to Essex Road, and the remaining houses curving gently into a shallow crescent. Numbers 266 to 270 are set forward as a central feature.

The ground floor has a rusticated effect achieved with bands. The ground-floor windows are round-arched and set within recessed round-arched panels of plain stucco. Steps lead up to the entrances, which include simple doorcases, fanlights – some with decorative glazing – and panelled doors. Number 246 has a side entrance on Rotherfield Street and now features a simpler round-arched entrance, doorcase, fanlight and panelled door. Number 290 has a round-arched entrance with a fanlight incorporated into a single-storey porch. The ground-floor windows are predominantly 2/8 sash windows. A horizontal band defines the division between the ground and first floors. The upper storeys have a scored finish to imitate ashlar masonry. The first and second-floor windows are flat-arched, also set within recessed segmental-arched panels of stucco. Shallow balconies have been added to some first-floor windows, although these have been largely replaced. There is a moulded sill band, a cornice and a blocking course at the top of the facade. Dormers are present in the mansard roof of numbers 252-258 and 286-290. Spearhead, urn and ball-and-disc finials are visible on the area railings and those flanking the entrance steps to numbers 246-264 and 280-290. The remaining railings have been replaced, either partially or entirely.
