Description
8 and 9 Alwyne Road are semi-detached houses built between 1847 and 1849, likely developed and designed by James Wagstaffe. They are constructed of yellow brick laid in Flemish bond, with stucco dressings and a slate roof. The houses rise three storeys above a basement, with three windows on each floor. The basement is stuccoed.
The entrance is accessed by steps in a two-storey outer bay that is slightly set back. It features a flat-arched entrance with pilaster-jambs, a cornice, an overlight, and a panelled door of original design. Above the entrance of number 8 is a flat-arched window with an architrave, while number 9 has a round-arched porch added in front of the entrance, though its mouldings have been stripped and the first floor has been rebuilt.
Both houses have flat-arched windows on all floors; the ground and first-floor windows have architraves and cornices on consoles, while the second-floor windows have architraves linked to the bracketed and moulded eaves cornice. The roofs are hipped, with chimney stacks on the party walls. Number 9 also has a single-storey 20th-century extension that is set back.
