Description
3 and 4 Alwyne Road are a pair of semi-detached houses built in 1848, likely developed and designed by James Wagstaffe. They are constructed of grey brick in Flemish bond with stucco detailing and have a slate roof. Each house has three storeys over a basement, with the main front featuring two bays and a lower porch wing set back to the side. The basement is stuccoed and has banded rustication. All windows are flat-arched with stucco architraves and reproduction sashes that include margin lights. The ground-floor windows have shouldered architraves and bracketed sills. The ground floor also features stucco quoins that rise to a broad band of brick over the lintels, topped by a stucco cornice. Each house has an attic window in the inner bay, flanked by pilaster strips, with a blank bay in between, all covered by a stucco cornice and blocking course that projects over the strips.
There are steps leading up to the porch, which has a flat-arched entrance with a plain stucco architrave; however, number 4 has pilasters and a cornice on consoles. The panelled door and overlight are also notable features. The porch of number 3 is a single-storey structure with a cornice that continues from the main front, while number 4 has its entrance incorporated into a 19th-century two-storey extension that features hoodmoulds over the ground and first-floor windows and a hipped roof. The main roofs of both houses are hipped, with stacks located on the party walls.
