Description

1 and 2 Alwyne Road are a pair of semi-detached houses built in 1848, likely developed and designed by James Wagstaffe. The houses are constructed of grey brick in Flemish bond with stucco, and feature a slate roof. They rise three storeys above a basement, with each house having a principal front that is two bays wide and a lower porch wing set back at the side. The basement is stuccoed and has banded rustication.

All windows are flat-arched with stucco architraves and reproduction sashes that include margin lights. The ground floor windows have shouldered architraves and bracketed sills, with window-guards on house number 1. The ground floor is accentuated by chamfered stucco quoins that extend up to a broad band of brick running over the lintels, topped with a stucco cornice. The eaves cornice is also bracketed.

Each house features an attic window in the inner bay, flanked by pilaster strips with a blank bay in between, all covered by a stucco cornice and a blocking course that breaks forward over the strips. There are steps leading up to the porch, which has a flat-arched entrance in a plain stucco architrave, along with a panelled door and overlight. The porches of both houses are two storeys high with a stucco cornice; the upper window of house number 2 is the only one that has an architrave. The main roofs are hipped, with stacks located on the party walls.
