Description

The Clothworkers Almshouses are a group of almshouses built around 1855, designed in a Jacobean style. They are constructed from yellow brick set in Flemish bond, with stucco detailing and roofs made of Welsh slate. The building consists of eight houses arranged in two blocks at right angles to each other, although they are now connected by new buildings and a screen wall between numbers 4 and 5. The entrances have been relocated to the rear, resulting in alterations to the main facades.

Numbers 1, 3, 4, 5, and 8 feature single-storey former porches with round-arched entrances that have been converted into windows, flanked by pilasters and topped with an entablature. In front of numbers 2, 6, and 7 are single-storey square bays with paired windows, pilasters, and entablature, which were likely former porches. Number 8 has a round-arched former entrance within the main gabled wing, supported by pilasters and an entablature.

On the first floor, there are flat-arched, two-light mullioned windows with stucco architraves, moulded cills, cyma recta cornices, and relieving arches, featuring 4/4 sashes that retain their original design. The buildings have gabled roofs and side stacks, and stucco panels displaying the Clothworkers' arms are located in the gables of numbers 2 and 6.
