Description

Numbers 1-4 Almeida Street are a group of circa 1840 semi-detached houses. They are constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond, with stucco dressings, and have roofs of Welsh and artificial slate. The houses are four storeys high with a basement, and each has a two-window range.

Porches are set back to the sides of the buildings. The porches at numbers 1 and 4 have been enlarged to three storeys, while those at numbers 2 and 3 are single-storey and linked. Steps lead up to round-arched entrances flanked by pilasters with stepped capitals, reminiscent of those on the Almeida Theatre. The door surrounds feature a cornice, archivolt, and fanlight, with decorative glazing to numbers 1 and 4. The porch cornice has paired modillions and a blocking course.

The ground floor is stuccoed, featuring round-arched windows within recessed round-arched panels, which have continuous impost strings and archivolts. Sashes with radial glazing bars are present in all windows except number 1. The upper-floor windows are flat-arched; those on the first floor (piano nobile) have stucco architraves and cornices, with consoles on the inner windows, all with cast-iron balconies. Second-floor windows have stucco architraves. A moulded eaves cornice sits above a parapet with balustraded panels. Each house has two dormers within a mansard roof, and stacks are situated on the party walls. Cast-iron area railings, finished with spearhead and ball-and-disc finials, are attached to the property.
