Description
These are a group of terraced houses, dated 1824 as indicated on a plaque on number 33, originally part of Canonbury Terrace. Number 31 was rebuilt in the mid-20th century. The development was undertaken by Richard Laycock. The houses are constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco detailing, and have a roof concealed behind a parapet. They are three storeys high, with two windows on each level.
The ground floor has been stuccoed with banded rustication. A segmental-arched entrance is topped with fluted quarter-columns and a deep cornice. Panelled doors are present at all properties except number 33, where an 18th or early 19th century door has been inserted. Some original glazing remains in the fanlights. Ground-floor windows at numbers 27 and 29 have cambered arches, while those at numbers 33 to 37 have round arches. The glazing bars in numbers 33 and 37 radiate outwards with margin lights, while those in number 35 have intersecting glazing bars. First-floor windows have a “piano nobile” proportion and either flat-arched stuccoed heads (at numbers 27 and 29) or gauged brick heads (at numbers 33 to 37). Balconies with iron railings are present at all first-floor windows; those at numbers 33 to 37 feature brackets. Second-floor windows have flat-arched stuccoed heads at numbers 27 and 29, and gauged brick heads at numbers 33 to 37. Original sash windows remain at numbers 27, 29, and 35. A stucco band and parapet are incorporated into numbers 27 and 29, while numbers 33 to 37 have a corniced detail and blocking course. The rebuilt number 31 retains the doorcase, panelled door, overlight, and ground and second-floor window proportions from the original building, although the brickwork is now in English bond.
