Description

49 and 50 St John's Square are terraced houses that have been converted into offices. They were built around 1781 and feature brown brick that has discoloured in places, with stucco and slate roofs. The buildings rise four storeys above a basement and have a four-window range. The basement and ground floor are stuccoed, with the ground floor showcasing banded rustication.

The round-arched entrance is framed by pilasters that support an entablature, cornice, and a stepped blocking course. The doorcase is deeply recessed and includes a cornice, fanlight, and a panelled door that is of original design. The stucco work terminates with a storey band. The upper windows are flat-arched on the first floor and cambered-arched on the second floor, featuring 6/6 sashes of original design throughout. There is a brick string course above the second-floor windows and a parapet on the roof.

Late 20th-century dormers are present in the mansard roof, and there are stacks at the ends. The basements of numbers 49 and 50 incorporate parts of the former Priory of St John of Jerusalem.
