Description

Numbers 32-62 (even) and attached iron railings comprise a terrace of 16 houses built in the 1850s. The construction is stucco over brick, with sections of exposed brown stock brick laid in Flemish bond. The roof is hidden behind a parapet. The terrace is arranged with a projecting central block of four houses, flanked by recessed blocks of four houses, and projecting end blocks of two houses, each block visually defined by imitation stucco chamfered quoins. The basement is stuccoed, and the ground floor is banded with stucco, featuring recessed, square-headed window openings with simulated keystones. Most of the original sash windows have been altered, but retain console brackets supporting the sills. Original cast-iron window-guards, in a rococo style with an egg and dart motif, remain. The original four-panelled doors and plain rectangular overlights survive to many properties. Number 32 is three windows wide with a side entrance bay. The upper floor is plain stucco with a sill band to architraved, full-length, recessed sash windows. Balconies, supported by console brackets and featuring original cast-iron railings with scroll, floral, and husk patterns, are present. The windows are square-headed and recessed, diminishing in height upwards from the first floor, all with architraves. The third-floor architraves have lugs, and a storey band consists of recessed panels. Number 46 has had detailing removed from the upper floors. Numbers 40, 42, 46, 48, and 50-62 have a modillioned stucco cornice and parapet. Party-wall chimney stacks are present. Some properties retain original attached iron porches and area railings.
