Description
Numbers 41A, 41 to 49 (odd) and attached railings are a group of five terraced houses built around 1839 to 1841, located on a sloping street approaching Percy Circus. They were likely designed by William Chadwell Mylne, Surveyor for the New River Estate. The houses are constructed of yellow stock brick with a stucco ground floor, which is lined to resemble ashlar (with banding at numbers 41 and 43), and stucco dressings. The party walls feature brick stacks, and the roofs are obscured.
The houses follow a side-hall entrance plan and stand four storeys high with a basement, each house originally featuring two windows. Numbers 41A and 41 incorporate a return wall with two windows on the left. A set of low steps leads to the entrance in the left bay of numbers 41A and 41, which also has entrances in Holford Street. The doorways have architraved surrounds, featuring console-bracketed rosette cornices. They contain panelled doors (20th century) and rectangular overlights, some with an oval pattern. The ground, first, and second floors contain 6/6 sash windows, while the first floor also features a stucco sill band. The first floor windows at numbers 41 and 43 are full-length sashes with gauges-brick flat arches and architraved surrounds with console-bracketed cornices. Coupled cast-iron bracketed balconies with iron railings are present. The second and third floors contain 3/3 sash windows with gauges-brick flat arches. The parapets at numbers 41 and 43 incorporate a brick triglyph motif, stone coping, and a cornice at the third-floor level. Attached cast-iron railings terminate with hubb and disc finials. The buildings are included in the listing for their group value.
