Description

Numbers 28-54 (even) and attached railings are a group of thirteen terraced houses built around 1839-1841, likely designed by William Chadwell Mylne, Surveyor for the New River Estate. They stand on a sloping street leading toward Percy Circus. The houses are constructed of multi-coloured stock brick with chamfered, rusticated stucco on the ground floor, except for a plain stucco return wall to Cumberland Gardens on number 28 and banded stucco on numbers 52-54. Party walls incorporate brick stacks, and the roofs are a combination of gabled (on numbers 40-44 and 48-52) and mansard (on numbers 28, 32-36, and 54), with some obscured by later alterations.

The layout follows a side-hall entrance plan. Each house is three stories high with a basement, and generally features two windows. Number 28 has a two-window return range to Cumberland Gardens, and number 54 has a two-window return range to Lloyd Street. Low steps lead to the entrances. Number 28 has a side entrance to the return, while number 54 has an altered stucco portico entrance. The ground floor features round-arched openings, including doorways recessed with pilaster jambs and fluted half columns. Number 28 has attached fluted Doric columns, and number 52 has a reeded door surround. These doorways are topped with corniced heads and contain 6-panelled doors (original to numbers 28-40 and 44-48, replaced in others during the 20th century) and fanlights (number 48 with a finely patterned design). The ground floor windows are 6/6 sashes, with margin lights to numbers 28, 32, 36, and 38.

The first floor has a stucco sill band and gauged-brick flat arched full-length sashes set in arched recesses, linked by stucco impost bands. Coupled cast-iron balconies with iron brackets and decorative patterns – anthemion, Vitruvian scroll, and Gothic (on number 48) – are complemented by railings. Gauged-brick flat arches are also present above the sashes on the second and third floors. The upper floors have undergone extensive rebuilding and patching. The original stucco cornice has been altered and in places removed (numbers 38 and 54), with a blocking course also present. Attached cast-iron railings are topped with pine-cone and torch finials.
