Description

Numbers 66-72 (even) and attached iron railings are a group of four terraced houses, dating from approximately 1839-1841. They are located on Great Percy Street in Islington, situated on a sloping street approaching Percy Circus. The houses were likely designed by William Chadwell Mylne, who served as Surveyor for the New River Estate.

The houses are constructed of yellow stock bricks with banded stucco to the ground floor and stucco dressings. Brick stacks are visible between the party walls, and the roofs are largely obscured. They follow a side-hall entrance plan, and are arranged over three storeys with a basement, each house originally featuring two windows.

A low set of steps rises to the entrance on the right-hand side of the building (number 68), with a side entrance set within the carriageway. This entrance has round-arched ground-floor openings recessed within the stucco. The doorways have panelled jambs, corniced heads, and panelled doors (dating to the 20th century), with a fanlight above. The windows are predominantly 6/6 sash windows throughout. The first floor has a stucco sill band, with gauged-brick flat arched, full-length sashes set in an arched recess. Coupled, bracketed balconies with an anthemion and Vitruvian scroll pattern support the cast-iron railings. The second floor also has gauged-brick flat arches to the sash windows. There has been extensive rebuilding and patching in of the upper floors. A parapet with stone coping sits atop the building, with a brick string course visible below. Attached cast-iron railings feature knob and disc finials.
