Description

Number 27, 29, and 31, along with the attached railings, are four terraced houses built between 1828 and 1829 by William Chadwell Mylne, who was Surveyor for the New River Estate. They include the building at number 24 Lloyd Baker Street. The houses are constructed of multi-coloured stock brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with banded stucco to the ground floors of numbers 27 and 29. Numbers 31 Amwell Street and 24 Lloyd Baker Street feature wooden and glazed-brick shopfronts. The roofs are hidden, and there are party-wall brick stacks.

The design incorporates a side-hall entrance plan for numbers 27 and 29, and a ground-floor shop with domestic rooms above for numbers 31 Amwell Street and 24 Lloyd Baker Street. The houses are three storeys high, with a basement to number 24 Lloyd Baker Street, and a single-story side entrance extension. Each house has two windows. Low steps lead to the entrance of numbers 27 and 29, with a round arch for number 29, all details of which date from approximately 1990.

The shopfronts at numbers 31 and 24 Lloyd Baker Street are from the mid to late 19th century. The shopfront at number 31 has a shop door on the right and windows to the left. Number 24 Lloyd Baker Street features a corner shop entrance flanked by shop windows, with a house entrance located on the return wall. Both shop fronts are articulated by console-bracketed pilasters supporting fascias and cornices. The upper floors have 6/6 sash windows within gauged-brick flat arches. A stucco sill band runs beneath the full-length sashes on the first floor, which are set in arched brick recesses with a continuous cast-iron bracketed balcony running along the front of numbers 27 and 29; the balcony has a Gothic pattern to the railings. Significant rebuilding of the upper floors has occurred. All houses feature a plain brick parapet with stone coping (irregular on number 29), and a stucco cornice and band to number 24 Lloyd Baker Street. Attached cast-iron railings are also part of the property.
