Description
Numbers 1 and 2 are a terrace of two houses built between 1824 and 1827, with later 20th-century rebuilding to number 2. They were designed by William Chadwell Mylne, the surveyor for the New River Estate. The houses are attached to numbers 1 to 12 River Street and lead into Myddelton Square from the west. They are constructed of yellow stock brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with banded stucco to the ground floor and stucco dressings. The roofs are concealed behind parapets, and there are brick party-wall stacks.
The houses have a side-hall entrance plan and four storeys plus a basement. Each house has two windows plus a return wall to Myddelton Passage at number 2. Steps lead to a round and elliptical-arched entrance with a doorway featuring three-quarter fluted column jambs, a corniced head, a plain fanlight and an original panelled door to number 2. The ground floor features round and elliptical-arched sashes recessed in stucco with a panel below. Upper floors have mostly 6/6 and 3/3 sashes in gauged brick flat arches, with some French doors. The first floor has a stucco sill band beneath full-length sashes set in arched recesses linked by stucco impost bands, with iron-bracketed coupled cast-iron balconies with Vitruvian scroll and anthemion pattern to the railings. The upper floors have been partially rebuilt. A plain brick parapet has stone coping.
Good quality attached cast-iron railings terminate in urn finials. A 20th-century brick wall exists to the Myddelton Passage elevation (number 2), replacing the earlier wall following bomb damage in the Second World War, which resulted in the demolition of numbers 3 and 4.
