Description

Numbers 6 to 11 Chadwell Street comprise a group of six terraced houses built between 1828 and 1829 by William Chadwell Mylne, who was Surveyor for the New River Estate. They are constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with rusticated stucco to the ground floor of numbers 6 to 10, and banded stucco to number 11. The roofs are not visible, although number 11 has a substantial roof extension with dormers and brick party-wall stacks. The houses follow a side-hall entrance plan, with three storeys to numbers 6 to 8 and four storeys to numbers 9 to 11, each having a basement. Each house originally had two windows.

The doorways have round arches with pilaster jambs to numbers 6 to 8, square-headed doorways with attached Doric columns to numbers 9 and 10, and a single-storey entrance extension to number 11; all featuring corniced heads and patterned fanlights (coloured glass in numbers 7 and 8), overlights and panelled doors. The windows are primarily 6/6 sash windows, with gauged brick flat arches above, some being French doors with margin lights. A stucco sill band runs beneath the full-length sashes on the first floor, set in arched brick recesses linked by a stucco impost band (except at number 11). Cast iron balconies with anthemion patterns are present, except at number 11 which has a circular pattern. Some rebuilding of the upper floors has taken place. The houses are topped with a plain brick parapet with stone coping. Attached cast iron railings have acorn or urn finials.
