Description
The New River Head Chimney Conduit, also known as the Devil's Conduit, is a chimney conduit located within the former Round Pond at the rear of the New River Head Office Building in Islington. It dates back to the 14th century, with later additions, and was originally situated in Queen's Square, Bloomsbury. It was dismantled and re-erected at New River Head in 1927. The structure is made of rusticated Portland stone ashlar with plain stone dressings. It features a flat stone roof on the upper chamber and a vaulted pebble-dash roof on the lower chamber, showcasing a symmetrical design. The conduit is set on a splayed plinth with a raised entrance to the upper chamber. Originally, this conduit served as an extension to the White Conduit, which supplied water to the Grey Friar's Monastery, later known as Christ's Hospital in Queen's Square.
