Description
Numbers 21-39 (odd) and attached railings are a group of ten terraced houses dating from approximately 1839-1841, with alterations in the 20th century. They were likely designed by William Chadwell Mylne, who served as Surveyor for the New River Estate. The houses are constructed of yellow stock bricks, with a rusticated stucco ground floor and stucco dressings. Party-wall brick stacks and obscured roofs complete the exterior.
The houses are arranged with a side-hall entrance plan and rising four storeys with a basement, featuring two windows each (except number 39, which includes a right return of two windows). Low steps lead to the entrance in the left bays of the building, with number 39 featuring a fine prostyle portico and a side entrance in Holford Street. The ground floor openings are round-arched, except for number 39, and include doorways with pilaster jambs supporting a corniced head, a panelled door (a 20th-century replacement at number 19), and a plain fanlight. Sash windows with 6/6 glazing are found on the ground floor, while the first and second floors feature similar sash windows. A stucco sill band marks the first floor, which has gauged-brick flat arched full-length sashes. Number 39 has architraved sashes with cornices on the first floor. Cast-iron balconies are present at numbers 21 and 23 (replacements from the 20th century), and coupled balconies with iron brackets at numbers 25, 29-39. The second floor sashes between numbers 21 and 23 and 29 and 35 have cast-iron window guards and are topped by gauged-brick flat arches. The third floor windows have a stucco sill band, with flat arches at numbers 21-23, 29-31, and 37-39, and round arches at numbers 25-27 and 33-35. Number 39 has undergone substantial rebuilding and patching to both elevations at the third floor level. The original stucco cornice is altered and cut back in most locations; however, it remains intact at numbers 21 and 23. A blocking course is also evident. Attached cast-iron railings with finials are a notable feature.
