Description

Four terraced houses were built around 1839 to 1840 and altered in the 20th century. They were likely designed by William Chadwell Mylne, the surveyor for the New River Estate. The houses are constructed of yellow and brown stock brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a banded stucco ground floor. The roofs are hidden behind a parapet, and there are brick party-wall stacks. They follow a side-hall entrance plan, and are three storeys high with a basement, each house featuring two windows.

Steps lead to the entrance of numbers 18A to 18, although the side entrance has been significantly altered and rebuilt in the 20th century. There is a doorway with pilaster jambs and a cornice head, an overlight, and an original four-panelled door to numbers 20 to 22. A 20th-century door and overlight are present at number 24. The windows are 6/6 sashes throughout. A stucco sill band runs along the first floor, featuring full-length architraved sashes with console-bracketed cornices (these have been removed from numbers 18A to 22). Individual cast-iron balconies are also present. The second-floor windows are architraved, with gauged-brick flat arches at numbers 18A to 20. A stucco cornice and blocking course run along the top of the facade, with number 18 cut back and number 24 featuring coping stones. Attached cast-iron area railings with foliated finials are present. The houses were named in honour of William Percy Smith, a former governor of the New River Company and an ex-Attorney General.
