Description

A terrace of fourteen houses on the south side of Claremont Square, built between 1821 and 1828. The terrace was designed by William Chadwell Mylne, who was Surveyor to the New River Estate. Around 1970, the houses were restored by Andrews Sherlock, architects. Number 31 was completely dismantled and refaced in 1979.

The houses are constructed of beige and gold stock brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with banded stucco ground floors. The roofs are hidden behind a parapet, and the party walls are brick. The design follows a side-hall entrance plan with a staircase. Each house has four storeys and a basement, with two windows each. The central block, comprising numbers 23 to 26, slightly projects from the main facade.

Steps lead to the entrances on the left side, where doorways feature fluted quarter-column jambs supporting corniced heads. The original six-panelled door has been replaced at number 31, while elliptical-arched fanlights (with patterned glass) are found above the doors at numbers 18 to 23 and 25 to 31. Windows on the ground floor are mainly of the 2/2, 6/6, or 8/8 sash type, with arched brick surrounds. The first floor has a stucco sill band and houses 6/6 full-length sash windows set in arched recesses, linked by stucco impost bands. Coupled iron-bracketed balconies with iron railings in a Vitruvian scroll and anthemion pattern are present. The second floor windows are 6/6 sashes, while the third floor windows are primarily 3/6 (with number 21 having 6/6 and number 22 having 3/3).

The houses have plain parapets, with stone coping at numbers 20 to 22 and 31, and a stucco parapet at numbers 23 to 30. There has been some rebuilding and patching-in on the upper storeys. Attached iron area railings feature knob and disc finials.
