Description
42 and 44 Pentonville Road are a pair of terraced houses built around 1800 to 1820. They are set back from the road and feature stucco that is lightly lined to resemble ashlar over a brick structure. The roofs are hidden by a parapet, and there are brick stacks at the end walls. The houses have a side-hall entrance plan and rise three storeys with semi-basements, each having two windows.
The round-arched doorway to the inner bay is reached by a curved flight of steps that has cast-iron railings. The doorway of number 42 has fluted columns, while number 44 features pilaster jambs. Both doorways are topped with a corniced head, a patterned fanlight, and panelled doors that have 20th-century glazing in the upper panels. There is an altered tented canopy that extends over both doorways, supported by 20th-century wooden posts.
The outer bays have round-arched 8/8 sash windows with intersecting Gothic-style glazing bars, while the upper floors contain 6/6 sash windows. The houses have plain parapets with stone coping.
