Description
This early 19th century house was later adapted for use as a restaurant and shop, with alterations dating to around 1905 and 1952. The exterior is constructed of multi-coloured stock bricks laid in a Flemish bond pattern. The roof is hidden behind a parapet, and there are brick stacks marking the party walls. The front features a glazed shopfront accented with faience tiles and painted glass details. It is three storeys high with a projecting ground-floor restaurant and shop, displaying a two-window front. The shopfront incorporates single 1/1 horned sash windows flanking a double wooden door with frosted glass lettering that reads "MANZE'S", with a rectangular overlight above. Stone sills are present, and below the sashes are brown faience tiles. Painted lettering on the fascia announces "-LIVE- EELS M. MANZE JELLIED EELS". A wooden cornice is topped with a console bracket on the left side.
The interior of the restaurant and shop is rectangular in plan, with a rear extension. The main restaurant area features nine bays of high-backed wooden benches and marble tables along the left wall, and a bar and four bays along the right wall, with a central passage. The benches have panelled, parallel high-backs resting on the floor, and the marble tables are cantilevered from the wall and supported by a single iron leg at the end. An original terrazzo floor lies beneath the booths, while the walls are mirrored and tiled with faience. The bar front is also tiled. The 1905 restaurant and shop represents an important and rare surviving example of a shop type once commonly found in London.
