Description

99 Chapel Market is a former fire engine house that has been converted into a shop. It was originally built in 1792 and was heightened in 1822, featuring a mid-Victorian shop front. The building is constructed of yellow stock brick with York stone coping. It has a single room plan and a large arched opening facing Chapel Market, which is now blocked and filled with a modern door. There are also blocked window openings on each side with gauged brick arches. A later Victorian shop addition has been made, but it is of lesser interest and has been altered. The interior lacks notable features. This structure was erected in 1792 by the parish of St James, Clerkenwell, to serve the growing development of Pentonville, and the order for its construction was issued by the Vestry in March 1792. The top floor was added in 1822. It is listed as an extremely rare surviving example of a Georgian fire engine house.
