Description
The War Memorial at St Silas Church is a First World War memorial erected in 1917, designed by Arthur Walker. It is made of limestone and timber and is located within the grounds of St Silas Church, immediately east of the church's chancel.
The memorial features a crucifix beneath a timber gable, standing on the capital of a tapering octagonal shaft with a moulded base, reaching approximately 3.5 meters in height. At the center of the cross is a carved limestone scroll inscribed with the letters: IN/ RI; Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, which translates to Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. The shaft is supported by a square plinth that is 0.8 meters high, which in turn rests on a two-tiered square base that is 0.3 meters high.
On the west face of the plinth, there is an inscription in incised lettering that reads: "TO THE GREATER GLORY OF/ GOD/ AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF/ OUR BROTHERS/ WHO DIED FOR/ ENGLAND HOME & DUTY/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914." The east face features the words "LEST WE FORGET" in raised lettering.
