Description
The West Portal and Islington Tunnel, part of the Regents Canal, was built in 1820 by John Nash. It features red stock brick set in English bond, accented with gold stock brick and stone dressings. The portal has an elliptical opening with a keystone, surrounded by radiating rusticated brick voussoir blocks and stone cheeks. It is flanked by brick pilasters that have stone bases and caps, which support remnants of a brick parapet. Inside the tunnel, the walls are barrel vaulted with brick and lined with plaster.
