Description

A terrace of ten houses fronts Claremont Square, built between 1821 and 1828 by William Chadwell Mylne, who was the surveyor for the New River Estate. The houses were restored around 1970 by Andrews Sherlock, architects. The construction is primarily gold and brown stock brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco ground floors. The roofs are artificial slate with dormers, and brick party-wall stacks rise above.

The houses follow a side-hall entrance plan with a staircase inside. They are three storeys high, with a basement and attic, and each has two windows. Steps lead to elliptical-arched entrances, with varying door surrounds: pilasters (at numbers 33-34 and 36-37), attached Doric columns (at number 35), and a fluted one-quarter column (at numbers 38-42). These support corniced heads over twin-panelled C20 doors and fanlights (the fanlight at number 33 retains its original patterned design, while the others are C20 replacements). The ground floor windows are 6/6 sashes, with gauged brick flat arches above. The first floor windows - also 6/6 sashes - are set in arched recesses linked by stucco impost bands, and are accompanied by individual iron-bracketed balconies with iron railings displaying a Gothic pattern. The second floor also features 6/6 sashes. The properties have plain parapets, a brick string course, and stone coping. Attached iron area railings with urn finials complete the exterior.
