Description

Numbers 12 to 23 form a terrace of twelve houses built in 1828-1829 by William Chadwell Mylne, who was Surveyor for the New River Estate. The houses are constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with banded stucco to the ground floor and stucco dressings. The roofs are hidden by the party wall brick stacks. The houses follow a side-hall entrance plan and are arranged over four storeys with a basement, each house having two windows.

A set of steps lead to a round, elliptical-arched or square-headed entrance, with number 12 featuring a one-story entrance extension. The entrances have fluted quarter-column jambs, pilaster jambs, and attached Doric columns supporting a corniced head. Fanlights are present above the doorways (patterned at numbers 16, 19 and 22; overlights at numbers 12-14), with an original panelled door at number 19. Original 6/6 sash windows are predominantly used on the ground floors; some have curved and radial glazing bars. The upper floors have 6/6 sashes set within gauged-brick flat arches, with a stucco sill band below. Full-length sashes are set in arched brick recesses linked by stucco impost banding, and individual cast-iron balconies with a Vitruvian scroll and anthemion pattern are present at numbers 12-14. The houses feature a plain brick parapet with an unusual dogtooth dentiled cornice and stone coping. Attached cast-iron railings are topped with acorn and urn finials.
