Description

Nos. 34-40 on Pentonville Road are four terraced houses, now used for commercial purposes. They were built around 1820-1830 and have been altered in the 20th century. The houses are constructed of yellow stock brick laid in Flemish bond, with the ground floor finished in stucco that mimics ashlar stone. The roofs are hidden behind a parapet, and there are brick stacks on the party walls.

Originally designed with a side-hall entrance plan, the houses are now connected as commercial showrooms and offices. They rise four storeys and each has two windows. The ground-floor openings are round-arched, with the doorways having been altered; however, the doorways of nos. 34 and 36 still feature fluted half-column jambs supporting modillioned corniced heads, plain fanlights, and six-panelled doors. The windows have been altered to include 1/1 and single plate-glass sashes, while the first-floor features full-length 6/6 sashes with coupled and bracketed cast-iron balconies, although the balcony for no. 34 was removed around 1980. These balconies are adorned with Gothic-style railings.

The upper floors are characterized by gauged-brick flat arches, with the first-floor sashes set in arched recesses. The second floor has 6/6 sashes, and the third floor has 3/3 sashes. The parapets are plain and topped with coping stones.
