Description
These are a terrace of houses located on College Cross, built between 1836 and 1843 by T. Pearson. The houses were constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco detailing and roofs covered in tiles and Welsh and artificial slate where visible. They are three storeys high over a basement, with some houses incorporating dormers in the attic. Most houses have two windows, although numbers 1-3, 11-13, and 21-23 project slightly forward.
The basement and ground floors are stuccoed, and the ground floor is decorated with banded rustication. Segmental-arched entrances feature pilasters, fanlights with decorative glazing, and original panelled doors. The first and second-floor windows are flat-arched, with gauged brick detailing above. The first-floor windows are larger, creating a “piano nobile” effect, and are accompanied by individual cast-iron balconies. A cornice and blocking course runs along the top of the facade. Stacks are present on the party walls between the houses.
Number 1 has a side entrance on Barnsbury Street, featuring a stuccoed architrave with Doric pilasters and an entablature, with fluted quarter-columns to the doorcase. A gable end is treated as a pediment with a flat-arched window. Numbers 3, 5, and 7 have flat-arched dormers in the attic. Number 11 lacks a cornice and has been extensively rebuilt, now featuring a dormer in the roof. Numbers 13-15 have painted brickwork on the upper floors and lack cornices. Number 21 has a flat-arched dormer. Number 23 has a two-storey entrance bay on its return side, with a segmental-arched entrance featuring a moulded architrave, pilasters, fanlight, and original panelled door, flanked by two pointed-arched windows with moulded architraves. A staircase wing with an additional entrance has been added to the rear.
